Welcome to the first episode of our video series based on the book “The Be Attitudes of Prayer”.
The purpose of this episode is to impress the importance of prayer upon your your heart and mind. As well as to give you a good foundation to build you life of prayer on.
Every single one of us would agree to the power and privilege there is in prayer. Yet, it appears that many of us only pray during times of crisis. Prayer becomes a knee jerk reaction to a problem we face. Or simply a means of asking God to give us what we desire.
Is that all there is to prayer? Or is there something more?
Over the next few weeks, we will look deeper into the subject of prayer, as we seek to answer the question as to what our attitude should be in prayer.
WHAT IS PRAYER, WHAT IS AN ATTITUDE?
Prayer can simply be defined as a conversation with God. Where we speak to Him and we wait for His response.
An attitude can be defined as a way of thinking, feeling and believing.
Therefore “The Be Attitudes of prayer” seeks to answer the question as to what our way of thinking, feeling and believing should be in times of prayer.
MORE THAN JUST A RELIGIOUS DUTY
One of the first misconceptions about prayer, is that it is a religious duty that must be performed. It is seen as as a ritualistic and routine activity that we fit into our busy lives. Whilst there is nothing wrong with routine in ours life, if we are not careful, we can turn prayer into a burdensome task that we tick off our to-do-list.
This my friends, is not an attitude that honors God. – How would you feel if someone felt that talking to you was a chore and a burden?
Jesus on the other hand did not teach us to pray that way. He taught us to relate to God as Our Father. Teaching us that the context of prayer is that of being in a loving relationship with The Father. Therefore, we are to pray from a place of relationship with God, and not merely performing our religious duty.
Prayer is about relationship.
JESUS CAME TO RESTORE RELATIONSHIP
Jesus did not come to start the christian religion. He came to restore the relationship that mankind lost through sin. It is for this reason that our prayers are to be more about growing in relationship with God than anything else.
Therefore, the primary be attitude in prayer, is that of being in a relationship with God.
PRAYER IS RELATIONAL AND OPERATIONAL
As we continue this series we will balance the relational and operational aspects of prayer.
The relational side meaning we get to know Him better through sharing our hearts with Him and allowing Him to share His heart with us.
The operational side meaning we pray in order to implement His will on the earth.
RELATIONSHIP IS THE FOUNDATION
In conclusion dear friends, prayer is so much more than a religious duty and a request line. It is a means of developing our relationship with God through two-way communication with Him.
Well friends, that’s it for today.
