“SPIRITUAL ANOREXIA”

I truly believe that everyone of our senses are a gift from God. Could you imagine life without one or any of them? Imagine being unable to see the sunrise, or smell the fresh air, imagine not being able to feel the touch of a loved one or hear the sound of the ocean. I certainly struggle at the thought, because it is through our senses that we enjoy the beauty of God’s creation.

One particular sense that we get to enjoy everyday, is our sense of taste. Most of us love a good, hearty meal or a delicious treat that puts a smile on our face. 🙂 – — Whilst gluttony is a sin, I love the last part of 1 Timothy 6:17 that says: ‘put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment’. Isn’t that stunning, God really wants us to enjoy life. Joy is a part of the Kingdom Life!

Having said that, I realise that there are people out there who simply don’t like food. For whatever the reason, they seem to treat food like an enemy, or resist it like temptation. My 7 year old son is one of them, we have to beg him to eat. I sometimes literally have to force food into his mouth whilst he plays video games. And to add insult to injury, when I asked him why, he said its because he does not want to be fat like me. (can you believe that???)       Thankfully, even though he is five kg’s under weight, he is not anorexic.

What is anorexia

Anorexia is a medical condition characterized by a long term loss of appetite due to not eating. In other words for some reason or other,a person starves themselves until they eventually loss their appetite and no longer desire food. The danger of this condition is that it leads to three main medical problems; osteoporosis, infertility and heart disease.

Translating this into a spiritual context, let us look at some of the words of Jesus. Do you remember when Jesus was being tempted by the devil in Mathew 4, He said that man shall not live on bread alone but on every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. Thus he equated God’s Word to spiritual food. Once again in John chapter 4, when his disciples had brought some food for him to eat, Jesus said that His meat was to do the will of The Father. From these two verses we see that The Word of God and The will of God are our spiritual food, therefore we need a steady diet of hearing and doing the will of God in order to stay healthy.

If we neglect the Word and will of God over a long period of time, we run the risk of becoming spiritually anorexic. This dreaded condition; like anorexia in the natural, causes three major issues:

  1. Osteoporosis- (bone disease).                                                                                                                                 Having a spiritual bone disease affects our ability to stand in the day of adversity. Our ability to stand strong or fall flat is linked to our spiritual diet.
  2. Infertility – ( unable to conceive and bear children).                                                                               Spiritual infertility is when we are unable to conceive and give birth to God given dreams and visions for our lives.
  3. Heart Disease.                                                                                                                                                            This one is self explanatory, failing to feed on the Word and will of God will cause us to develop spiritual cardiac problems. Jealousy, unforgiveness, bitterness and all the heart issues will strike, leaving us vulnerable to the attacks of the enemy.

In closing dear friends, let us not neglect our spiritual food of the Word and will of God. Like new born babes, let us desire the sincere milk of the Word that we may grow up in your salvation, now that we have tasted that the Lord is good.(1 Peter 2:3)

I pray for your spiritual appetite, may you hunger for and enjoy the will of God that is sweeter than honey.

“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Psalm 119:103

Much Love to All
