In today’s article we are going to look at few thoughts surrounding the concept of hearing from God. It is of great concern to me that many believers do not believe that God still speaks to us today. Of those who do believe, many do not know how to hear from Him in the course of everyday life. Then there are some who believe that God does speak, but only to a select few.

So in this blog, it is my intention to bring to you the truth that God does speaks to us today, and how you can tune into his voice in order to hear from Him.

The real question is not whether or not God is speaking, but are we listening?

He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches” Revelations 2:7

With that in mind, Let us look at four points on how to develop our ability to hear from God.

1) Study the written Word as a foundation.

Your study of the Bible is the essential starting place for hearing from God. There are two basic reasons for this, firstly, because the bible contains the answer for every issue we will ever face in this life. Secondly, nothing that God says to us will ever contradict His Word.

The Bible is The Foundation, The Blueprint, and the benchmark for measuring every subsequent message we receive.

Without a proper grounding in the Word, we open ourselves up to deception and confusion.

2) Be a doer of the Word

‘If you desire to hear from God, have a readiness to obey His voice”
The written word is the blueprint for life in the Kingdom of God, and it covers every issue we will ever face in this lifetime. It is for this reason that before we hear the spoken word, we must to see to it that we are walking in obedience to the written word. Obedeince the written word is the starting place for us hearing the spoken word.

“Be doers of the Word and not hearers only, so deceiving yourself” James 1:22

What does it mean to be doer of the word? – If you study it really carefully, you will find that it means to do what the Bible says. This is very deep, I know…… but you will be surprised how many people read the bible, know what they ought to do, and yet come up with hundreds of excuses as to why they are exempt from obeying certain scriptures.

I could give you hundreds of examples, especially in the area of love and forgiveness, the way we treat people and how we handle our finances.

In being doers of the word, let us be mindful of the fact that God is good, and if He requires anything of us, He has our best interest at heart. If we can trust Him with our eternal future, surely we can trust Him completely with our time here on earth.

3) Clear your life of distractions.

God is always speaking, are you always listening?

There are a number of reasons as to why we fail to hear from God, the reasons include: ignorance, arrogance, stubbornness, disobedience. However, the main reason that we do not hear the voice of our Shepherd is because we are too distracted by the cares of this world.

Distractions such as social media, technology, television and over committing ourselves to things that God has not called us to, are just some examples of the distractions that keep us preoccupied. These things are not a sin in themselves, but they cloud our minds and hearts from maintaining a listening ear to His often still, small, voice.

In short, we need to ‘tune out’ from all other frequencies and ‘tune in’ to the frequency of heaven.

4) Surrender to the will of God daily.

Accepting Jesus as our Lord and Saviour does not mean that we have surrendered every part of our lives to Him. If we are entirely honest with ourselves, even after years of walking with The Lord, we still make many of our decisions without consulting Him.

Surrendering to Jesus is a daily decision to follow in His footsteps. The Apostle Paul said that he died daily. Yielding to the will of God is not an event, but rather a heart posture that says: Lord; you are the Potter, and I am the clay, shape me and mould me, I trust and obey.

Selfish and strong willed individuals will very seldom know the leading of The Holy Spirit, because The Lord will not force His will on anyone. He respects our freedom of choice and will leave us to our own devices if we so desire. However, to those who surrender to Him, He takes us into a destiny that is far more rewarding and fulfilling than anything we could ever have dreamed up for ourselves.

We will hear God infinitely clearer if we:

1) study the scripture as a foundation.

2) obey the written word as a blueprint.

3) clear our lives of all clutter and distractions.

4) surrender ourselves daily to the will of God.

Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them” John 13:17
